Independence day is fast approaching, and this means backyard barbeques, fun in the sun, and fireworks. With Fourth of July a mere week away, JKM has put together some of our favorite craft ideas for the holiday celebration.
Patriotic Ribbon Topiary:
This ribbon topiary makes for a great centerpiece or outdoor decoration. Plant the topiary in a clay pot or hang as an outdoor ornament – the possibilities are endless!
Supplies:
- Large Styrofoam Ball
- Americana Ribbon (variety)
- Straight Pins
- Wooden Dowel
- Planter Pot (optional)
Cut ribbons into small sections, approximately 4 inches long. Loop ribbon into a circle so that the ends slightly overlap. Use a straight pin to pin through the overlapping ends. Pin the ribbon loop into the styrofoam ball, alternating and overlapping various ribbons to create textured effect. To ‘plant’ your topiary, insert the wooden dowel and place in clay pot or ground. You can also get creative and use your topiary piece as a hanging ornament. Attach a long piece of ribbon to the styrofoam ball and hang it for decoration!
Fourth of July Ribbon Wand:
This is a fun project for kids and a great alternative for sparklers during a Fourth of July celebration.
Supplies:
- Wooden Dowel
- Patriotic Adhesive Wrapping Paper
- Americana Ribbon (variety)
- Small Eye Bolt

Measure the length of your wooden dowel. Cut section of adhesive wrapping paper in order to fully cover wooden dowel. Next, screw small eye bolt into the top of your wooden dowel. This will be used to secure ribbon. Next, cut the ribbon into pieces. You can cut smaller pieces to resemble a ‘sparkler’ or longer ribbons for more of a ribbon dancer effect. You can even cut different lengths to create a textured aesthetic! However, cut ribbon twice as long as you want the final length to be. After cutting all the pieces, line up your ribbons evenly. Loop through the eye bolt and tie in a knot to secure. Congrats, now you have a fun and safe alternative for Fourth of July celebrations!
